Cleveland Bikes Activities
ClevelandBikes is committed to sound legislation and public policy and comprehensive “complete the streets” transportation policy, education, safety and health initiatives for children and adults and special events to promote cycling in Northeast Ohio!
Protecting Cyclists and Promoting Cycling Safety: When incendiary local “talk” radio criticized cyclists’ right to ride in the streets and parks and treated cycling safety as a humorous and casual issue, cyclists got mad and got organized! When cyclists in other cities described similar threats to riding safety, cyclists took action! Under threat of a complaint to the Federal Communication Commission, Clear Channel (the radio station owner) contributed to a fund for cycling safety and education and ClevelandBikes was born!
Assisting on Local Transportation Policy: ClevelandBikes serves as an information resource for cyclists, planners, engineers and others seeking input from the cycling community. ClevelandBikes work with government at the local, state an national levels to develop sound transportation policy. ClevelandBikes assists in the establishment of bike lanes on roads and bridges, more access on urban commuter trains, greater cycling opportunities in parks and the Cuyahoga Valley and has led the way in developing the Bicycle Station in Cleveland's Gateway Neighborhood. Additionally, ClevelandBikes conducted a thorough review of the local laws of Northeast Ohio communities, recommending law reform to conform with best safety practices and assisted on state law reform.
Education and Safe Cycling: Do you remember the joy of your first bike? A bicycle is a child's first vehicle, providing freedom and independence, but must be exercised with a sense of responsibility. In the summer of 2006, ClevelandBikes held safe cycling activities for Cleveland youth, providing free bicycle inspections, riding lessons and helmets. The safety activities were made possible through the support of the Neighborhood Connections program of the Cleveland Foundation. Volunteers have also assisted communities with strategies to develop “Safe Route to Schools” to encourage more bicycle riding by young area residents.
ClevelandBikes volunteers are working to make Northeast Ohio
a better place to live, work and ride a bike!
